Kiln Issues Not Fun

Know how you plan on doing something "quick" and just assuming things will come out just right because you've done it hundreds of tunes before?

Well, two times this week I have fired my little kiln and two times it has over fired. Not to the complete meltdown point - but to the "oh man, these are not the colors I was looking for" point...

The thing that really stinks is I have to glaze & fire these pieces for a third time. All. Over. Again. I hope I have enough stock...

At least some are still really good looking and OOAK.

Now to glaze again, and fire in another kiln until I fix the little one...

  1. Poop, I hate when kiln accidents happen. I see it's on a kiln sitter. My first thought was the pyrometer but that's not the case at all is it? I hope you get it sorted soon!

  2. Need to adjust your kiln sitter? or use a lower temp cone?

  3. Probably 'tired' elements. They take longer to get to temp & end up over firing. Longer soaking at lower temp mimics too high a temp.
Glad you have extra stock & another kiln.

  5. What a bummer. Hope you get it fixed soon. You do not have extra time for this stuff!!

  6. Sorry to hear of the over firing. What brand kiln is that? I've never seen one shaped like that.

  7. OUCH! Nothing worse than when the best plans go awry -- but sometimes they DO yield wonderful OOAK results.....Hang in there!!!

  8. Thanks everyone. I tried sanding the metal parts and that seemed to do the trick. We'll see though :)
